Joint earthquake ruptures of the San Andreas and San Jacinto faults, California, USA

چکیده

Abstract Large, multi-fault earthquakes increase the threat of strong ground shaking and reshape probability future events across a system faults. Fault junctions act as conditional barriers, or earthquake gates, that stop most but permit junction-spanning when stress conditions are favorable. Constraining physical favor requires information on frequency isolated versus activate faults through junction. Measuring this is challenging because dating uncertainties limit correlation paleoseismic at different faults, requiring direct approach to measuring rupture an gate. We show documentation finite-element modeling secondary fault slip co-rupture San Andreas Jacinto (California, USA) Cajon Pass gate occurred least three times in past 2000 yr, recently historic 1812 CE earthquake. Our models gate-breaching taper steeply halt abruptly they transfer between Comparison independent chronologies shows 20%–23% co-ruptures Pass.

A case for historic joint rupture of the San Andreas and San Jacinto faults

The San Andreas fault is considered to be the primary plate boundary fault in southern California and the most likely fault to produce a major earthquake. I use dynamic rupture modeling to show that the San Jacinto fault is capable of rupturing along with the San Andreas in a single earthquake, and interpret these results along with existing paleoseismic data and historic damage reports to sugg...

A new method to identify earthquake swarms applied to seismicity near the San Jacinto Fault, California

S U M M A R Y Understanding earthquake clustering in space and time is important but also challenging because of complexities in earthquake patterns and the large and diverse nature of earthquake catalogues. Swarms are of particular interest because they likely result from physical changes in the crust, such as slow slip or fluid flow. Both swarms and clusters resulting from aftershock sequence...

Initiation of the San Jacinto Fault and its Interaction with the San Andreas Fault: Insights from Geodynamic Modeling

The San Andreas Fault (SAF) is the Pacific-North American plate boundary, yet in southern California a significant portion of the relative plate motion is accommodated by the San Jacinto Fault (SJF). Here we investigate the initiation of the SJF and its interaction with the SAF in a threedimensional visco-elasto-plastic finite-element model. The model results show that the restraining bend of t...

San Andreas Fault Earthquake Chronology and Lake Cahuilla History at Coachella, California

The southernmost ∼100 km of the San Andreas fault has not ruptured historically. It is imperative to determine its rupture history to better predict its future behavior. This paleoseismic investigation in Coachella, California, establishes a chronology of at least five and up to seven major earthquakes during the past ∼1100 yr. This chronology yields a range of average recurrence intervals betw...
